Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is seeking a client program specialist for engagement through the firm’s contract attorney and alternative staffing program, DWTSurge. This contract position will work with the Firm’s litigation practice group to help support a high-volume of litigation cases, including small claims, for large institutional DWT clients. Candidates based in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC, Maryland or Virginia are preferred.

 

The selected candidate will assist with fact investigations and the legal defense of various demands and litigation matters, including appearing in small claims courts as assigned by supervisors. Working collaboratively as part of a team of legal professionals, the candidate will support matters assigned by DWT on behalf of DWT clients. Responsibilities include direct communication with plaintiffs, responding to demand letters, preparing for settlement conferences, and court appearances. The role also requires travel to and appearances in small claims court on behalf of DWT clients.

 

Candidates who are willing to travel to and appear in court as needed, who are excited about this unique opportunity to obtain hands-on courtroom experience, and who are eager to learn and be trained on the requirements of this role, are encouraged to apply. Beyond occasional travel on the East Coast (New York and Washington DC metro areas) for specific proceedings and assignments, the work will be fully remote. We anticipate the role will require full-time hours, averaging 37.5 hours per week. The amount of work may vary from week to week and a minimum number of hours per week is not guaranteed. While the engagement is for an initial 6-month contract term, we anticipate the work to remain relatively steady and there is a high likelihood that the contract position may be renewed for successful candidates.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 1+ years of work experience, legal industry experience is preferred but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Residency in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, or Washington DC.
  • Availability during East Coast business hours to ensure strong collaboration with other team members.
  • Ability to and interest in appearing in court to handle small claims cases on behalf of a DWT client.
  • Strong desire to learn the legal support skills necessary to perform the role.
  • Previous public speaking experience is preferred.
  • Ability and desire to travel as frequently as needed.

Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is seeking a litigation attorney for engagement through the firm’s contract attorney and alternative staffing program, DWTSurge. This contract attorney position will work with the Firm’s litigation practice group to manage and support a high-volume of third-party subpoena requests and litigation responses for several of DWT’s institutional clients. While the role is remote, attorneys should be able to accommodate West Coast business hours. Attorneys must hold active bar admission in their state of residence and a state where DWT maintains an office.

 

Attorneys with prior experience at large litigation firms or in-house with technology corporations, significant experience in all phases of litigation, and who are seeking more flexibility in their practice, are encouraged to apply. In addition to flexibility, candidates can expect to work closely with DWT attorneys as part of a collaborative team, providing high-value legal services to DWT clients.

 

Attorneys should be highly organized with strong case management skills and will be required to regularly manage multiple matters with competing deadlines. The selected paralegal clerk will be responsible for tracking, assigning, and assisting in drafting responses to subpoenas, managing high-volume litigation databases, escalating legal questions, and other tasks as needed in support of litigation matters.  Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is searching for a full-time, fully-remote, patent prosecution patent attorney, with a background in the software arts, to work through the Firm’s alternative-track attorney and staffing program, DWTSurge. We are particularly interested in patent attorneys who have experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications either as part of an in-house team or at medium or large law firms. The selected patent agent will handle patent procurement and prosecution work for the Firm’s clients in a variety of industries both domestic and international.

 

Candidates who are located in the Seattle, DC, New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco areas and who can attend occasional meetings at DWT's local offices are preferred. As the role is fully remote, candidates who reside in one of the following states will also be considered: AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, MD, MN, MT, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA*, TN, TX, VA, WA, WDC, or WV. Patent attorney candidates must be admitted to practice in their state of residence and a state where DWT maintains an office.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 2+ years of patent preparation and prosecution experience, either in-house or as outside counsel, specifically in the software arts (e.g., machine learning, cloud computing/networking, cryptography, information security, or distributed ledger technology).
  • A J.D. and a B.S. degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO.
  • Residency and active bar admission in one of the following states: AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, MD, MN, MT, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA*, TN, TX, VA, WA, WDC, or WV. Residency and bar admission in CA, NY, WA, or WDC preferred. (*jurisdiction-specific)
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, including demonstrated ability to take ownership for, and efficiently manage, a large docket including meeting internal and external deadlines by working independently and with supervisors.  
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to being responsive to client needs. 
  • Excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Legal, industry, and/or academic experience in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and/or computer science, particularly with wireless communications, robotics, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cryptography, information security, and/or blockchain is preferred.
  • Familiarity with operations of large organizations with established patent programs is a plus.

 

Please note that this position is managed by DWT’s flexible attorney and staffing program, DWTSurge, and offers a contract for a specified term that may be renewed on an annual basis for successful candidates. The initial term offered will run through the end of the calendar year and will offer full time employment with an annual 1,800 billable hour requirement. We are interested in candidates who are electing to pursue a more flexible way of practicing while also focusing on providing continuous, high-value legal services to clients. Those who excel in the role will potentially be engaged for additional terms.

 

Compensation:

The annualized salary range for this full-time contract patent agent position for the following locations is:  

  • District of Columbia - $198,000 to $229,000
  • Los Angeles, California - $199,000 to $231,000
  • San Francisco, California - $213,000 to $249,000
  • New York - $186,000 to $220,000
  • Washington - $179,000 to $211,000
  • Maryland - $198,000 to $229,000
  • Minnesota - $148,000 to $175,000

 

Actual pay will be adjusted based on the candidate’s education, training, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
