Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is seeking a part-time Washington real estate and land use attorney for engagement through the firm’s contract attorney and alternative staffing program, DWTSurge. This contract attorney position will work with the Firm’s Real Estate and Land Use practice group to support land use matters for the firm’s Washington clients. Attorneys must reside and have active bar admission in Washington. This contract position will work independently to assist clients with real estate and land use transactional matters, including permitting, siting, and developing residential, public, and commercial projects. The selected attorney will also analyze land use compliance matters to support landowners with litigation and administrative hearings, and manage complex real estate closings.
Mid to senior level attorneys who are seeking reduced hours and more flexibility in their practice are encouraged to apply. In addition to flexibility, candidates can expect to work closely with DWT attorneys as part of a collaborative team, providing high-value legal services to DWT clients. This role is client facing and requires a high-level of commitment to excellent client service. Attorneys should be able to work independently and exercise good judgement, but should also collaborate easily with various stakeholders, other lawyers, and support staff to meet objectives within short deadlines. This part-time contract position offers the flexibility of an anticipated 8-12 hours/week based in our Seattle, WA office. There is a possibility of additional hours of work per week depending on the candidate skill set, ability, and successful integration into the practice group. We are looking for attorneys interested in establishing a flexible, alternative-track working relationship with the Firm. The ideal candidate will have: - 4+ years of land development work or transactional real estate work in the land development area at a large or mid-size law firm or in-house.
- Residency and active bar admission in Washington.
- Demonstrated experience in real estate and land use transactional matters.
- Expertise in land use compliance and environmental law.
- Ability to independently manage complex real estate closings for residential and commercial properties.
- An understanding of Washington real estate law.
- Availability to work 8-12 hours per week and adaptability to variability in the volume of work.
- Flexibility to potentially increase hours as needed.
- Ability to work from the firm’s Seattle, WA office.
- High-level of responsiveness and client service abilities.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Please note that this is a temporary contract position managed by DWT’s flexible attorney program, DWTSurge. Compensation will be paid on an hourly basis, commensurate with experience and skill level (see below). This role is not benefitted. The ideal candidate will have: - 8+ years of proven experience in tariff law, customs regulations, international trade, and related fields at a large or mid-size law firm, or tariff/customs boutique, or in-house.
- Residency in one of the following states: AK, AZ, CA, CT, FL, GA, IL, MD, MN, MT, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, VA, WA, and WDC.
- Active bar admission in their state of residence and a state in which DWT maintains an office.
- Provided advice on complex tariff- and customs-related issues.
- Demonstrated experience representing corporations in all aspects of tariff and customs related matters.
- Knowledge of administrative protests, rulings, internal advice proceedings, penalty and mitigation proceedings, country of origin and marking issues, drawback claims, and duty and tariff preference regimes.
- Experience regarding customs enforcement, tariff mitigation, audits, duty savings programs, anti-dumping and countervailing duties, customs litigation, and voluntary partnership programs.
- Ability to independently manage complex tariffs and customs issues with minimal supervision.
- Interest in staying updated on changes in trade laws and regulations to offer timely and accurate advice.
- Availability for sporadic work and adaptability to fluctuations in workload.
- Flexibility to potentially increase hours as needed.
- Option to work occasionally from the firm’s Seattle, WA or D.C. office, though not required.
- High-level of responsiveness and client service skills.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities.
- Excellent writing skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to produce high-quality work to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Experience in other areas of international trade -- e.g., export controls (EAR and ITAR), trade sanctions and CFIUS – are desirable but not essential for successful candidacy for this position. Please note that this is a temporary contract position managed by DWT’s flexible attorney program, DWTSurge. Compensation will be paid on an hourly basis, commensurate with experience and skill level (see below). This role is not benefitted.
